In-line with their ISO standardisation drive, CompTIA have updated both A+ & Network+ exams to 2009 versions. The former A+ (edition 2006-2007) examinations that were categorised using the '600' prefix are being phased out worldwide through 2010. After 31st August 2010 they will not be obtainable in Britain. Because both the '600', and the recently released 700 examinations are currently available to sit in Prometric & Vue test centres, it seems sensible to study the '700' examinations now, and not have to re-certify later. The specific A+ '09 exams have become: CompTIA 'A+' Essentials (examination 220/701) and CompTIA 'A+' Practical Application (exam 220-702.) The main changes were a total restructuring of the previous 4 examinations into just two examinations, and the addition of some information on newer technologies. Although the older A+ had four examinations in the complete program, only two were necessary for the accreditation. During the last several years, the industry has progressed to the stage where all 4 examinations are now considered essential - hence the reformatting in to two essential exams. 'CompTIA' also have released the BR/003 bridging test, for people qualified under the 600 examinations who want to up-date to the current '700' exams. This will almost certainly necessitate extra learning, although not so much if you covered information on all 4 of the earlier examinations, instead of just the minimum two. The newly created subjects will of course necessitate some extra learning.
